Current techniques that are generally used are wet underwater welding and hyperbaric welding. Underwater welding is used in the repair of offshore structures and pipelines, ships, submarines, and nuclear reactors. Therefore, the final stress-strain curve is influenced by the five different metals acting in series, and longitudinal properties of all 3 steel types were determined to help in the evaluation of the different material behaviors. The tension specimen gage length included a short length of the beam flange, the entire flange weld, the entire through thickness of the column flange, the continuity plate weld, and a short length of the continuity plate as illustrated in Figure 15. A number of specimens were tested for each condition, and so the results provide statistical data as well as direct comparison of the weld metal and strain rate effect. Some specimens were tested under static (ASTM E-8) test conditions and others were tested with strain rates of up to 0.3 in/in/sec, since this exceeds the maximum predicted strain rate for the Northridge Earthquake. The FCAW process combines the productivity of continuous feed wire welding and the metallurgical benefits derived from the use of flux and the support of slag in shaping and protecting the weld bead from contamination and providing controlled cooling of weld metal.

Gas-shielded FCAW uses a protective gas flow in addition to the flux core action. Self-shielded FCAW protects the molten metal through the decomposition and vaporization of the flux core by the heat of the arc. An extensive slag cover is produced during welding. The flux-cored electrode is a composite tubular filler metal electrode with a metal sheath and a core of various powdered materials. The alternative is to supply an external shielding gas, in which case the process is called shielded FCAW (FCAW-S). Shielding is obtained from a flux contained within the tubular electrode, in which case it is called self-shielding FCAW.
